Tax Audit and ITR Deadline Extended for AY 2026-27
If you run a company, a firm, or any business that needs a tax audit, you just got a little breathing room.
On 28 September 2026, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) extended two important dates for Assessment Year 2026-27. The last date to upload the tax audit report has moved from 30 September to 21 October 2026. The last date to file the income tax return for these audit cases has moved from 31 October to 21 November 2026.
Who does this help? Companies, other taxpayers whose accounts must be audited under the Income-tax Act or another law, and partners of firms whose accounts are audited. It does not cover everyone. Salaried people and others who do not need an audit keep their earlier dates.
Chartered accountants and business owners had been asking for more time. Audits take work: books have to be checked, figures have to match, and the report has to go up on the e-filing portal before the return can be filed. The extra three weeks should make that process a bit less rushed.
One practical point: you do not have to wait until the new last date. If the audit is already done and the report is uploaded, you can file the ITR right away. Treat the extra days as a safety net, not an invitation to delay. A late audit report can still attract a penalty, and last-minute filing often means avoidable mistakes.
So if this extension applies to you, use the time well. Finish the audit properly, check the numbers once more, and file on time. Twenty-one days is helpful. It is not endless.
